River of Light
A Novel
River of Light is the story of Georgia country people and their struggles to work and keep their land. Though the novel is set in the Thirties, it could well be contemporary: Lloyd Sloan desperately works his once-rich farm, loses it to the bankers, and fights to get himself and his family back to the land. This is the story of Lloyd's valiant struggle against his bad luck, and also the story of Jessie Walsh, a vivacious, though life-hardened migrant woman, whose radiant and healing spirit slowly works on Lloyd and the land and the people in their community.
Praise for River of Light:
“Brenda Peterson knows her country people — their love of the land and the depth of their roots….The unlikely liaison of Jessie and Lloyd, the odd and painful destinies of the children — his and hers — make unusually moving reading. Brenda Peterson’s deep understanding of country people and the land that is the life and spirit to them, the lovely way she weaves her tale, shows she is a writer to watch.”
