Wild Chorus: Finding Harmony with Whales, Wolves, and Other Animals

In Wild Chorus, award-winning author Brenda Peterson draws on her lifelong relationship with animals to explore the wisdom we humans can glean from them. Looking beyond the companionship we enjoy with domesticated animals, Peterson explores how wild animals can become our guides and fellow travelers, helping us navigate the stresses of daily life and a rapidly changing planet.

From beluga whales to wolves, raccoons to bears, elk to herons, the stories in this collection offer insights into the intricacies of animals’ intuitive communication, compassionate attention, and peaceful adaptation. Featuring vivid, visionary stories, Wild Chorus reveals a world filled with inspiring lessons of kinship, connection, and living in the present. Join Peterson on an incredible journey as she speaks for animals as both an artist and an activist to discover the power of learning from the natural world.

I WAS RAISED as a wild animal. My early years in a remote Forest Service lookout cabin in the High Sierra, we were surrounded by more animals than people. Imprinting on animals, I expected to grow up to show off the most luxurious velvet antlers, to howl harmoniously as a wolf, to steal unseen like a fox through the seemingly endless, old-growth forest.

Early Praise for Wild Chorus

Wild Chorus is a heart song of lyric writing, deep tenderness, and more-than-human wisdom. Through her extraordinary and transformative encounters with animals from wolves to whales, animal adept Brenda Peterson affirms the vital and vivid connections between us and the rest of creation, connections that keep the world alive. This book is beautiful, brave, and important. Brava!”
Sy Montgomery, author Soul of an Octopus and How to Be a Good Creature

“Brenda Peterson does it once again! In a period of time in which so many people feel alienated from nature, she seamlessly draws us into the fascinating worlds of a wide variety of nonhuman animal beings so that we can experience what life is like for them and how, when we open up our senses and hearts to what they're saying to one another and to us, we can easily rewild ourselves and feel at one with the magnificent animals with whom we share our awe-inspiring planet.”
